Camp NaNoWriMo: Finally, a win!

By Katharine Swan On Monday, July 27, 2015 At 8:29 PM

I started this week off on a high note: I "won" Camp NaNoWriMo, achieving my meager goal of 10,000 words of blogging in July.

It may not sound like much, especially when compared to November's 50,000-word goal, but to me this represents a huge accomplishment.

First of all, I decided to make my goal blog writing instead of fiction writing because I've gotten so terrible about updating my blogs, especially during the first month of my summer schedule.  Maintaining my blog network (as I do have a small network) is important to me, so I want to make rebuilding it a priority.  I used to get a lot of traffic, back when I blogged more frequently and more regularly, and I'd like to achieve that again someday.

Secondly, though, this win represents my first one since I moved out on my own over a year ago.  I hadn't won a session of either Camp or regular NaNoWriMo since.  My freelance work had to come first, since I was financially responsible for both myself and my horses for the first time since 2005.

It may be only 10,000 words, but to me it's a milestone.  I was able to achieve it, not only while supporting myself, but also while maintaining full-time nanny work and part-time freelance work.  My summer schedule isn't easy, but I was still able to reach my goal!

It also bodes well for the fall, when I'll be taking on a lot again.  I've applied to become an ML (Municipal Liaison, basically an organizer for local NaNoWriMo events and community) this year, and it's fairly likely I'll be approved, since we're down to one in Denver and our large, active area really needs two.  So I'll be quite busy in November, especially since I'm determined to win that one, too!
