End-of-summer countdown

By Katharine Swan On Monday, July 20, 2015 At 2:08 PM

We're well past the middle of summer now, around the point where I generally start counting down until the kids go back to school.  Summers are already busy for me, but this summer has been a whirlwind, with much of my time occupied with just trying to stay afloat.

Somehow, I'm managing to work full-time hours at my nanny job, maintain my side babysitting jobs, and maintain my part-time freelance workload.  And this month, I'm even keeping up on Camp NaNoWriMo goals (although admittedly, I'm only aiming for 10,000 words, and I'm using Camp to motivate me to blog, which is easier than motivating me to pick up a novel with a cold trail).

How am I doing it, you ask?  I'm not really sure.  I know my riding time is suffering, and my sleep too, which I'll talk about later in the week.  Perhaps a little bit of my mental health, as well: I allowed myself the morning to relax yesterday, but that didn't entirely stave of the mini-breakdown in the afternoon, which was mainly a buildup of frustrations that wouldn't normally have gotten to me like they did.

Right now, there are five weeks left of summer, although I only work four of those.  (Thank heavens -- I can't wait for that week off!)  And the last couple weeks will be the worst, as I'm taking on some barn chores for a reduction in board, starting in mid-August, which means it'll overlap a little with my summer schedule -- not ideal, but it couldn't be helped.

My friends think I'm crazy for wanting summer to be over, but every year, my summers get busier.  Staying afloat is about the best I can manage.

How about you?  Do you have kids at home that you're eager to send back to school?  Or do you get to enjoy the ideal of a relaxing summer, with lazier, longer days, which we all dream of?
