Musings on masters degrees

Today I'm on my old college campus with a friend of mine, who just transferred here from community college to finish his degree.  It's been a couple years since I've been down here, and it's always so refreshing to visit.  I loved this campus, and I loved college.  My three and a half years here were far too short.

Being here has me thinking again about masters degrees.  I tossed around the idea of pursuing one years ago, but ultimately decided not to, partly because I'm busy and partly because I feel like it wouldn't be all that beneficial to my career.

Maybe the latter isn't necessarily true, though.

At the time, I'd been thinking in terms of an online masters program in professional writing.  The list of courses sound a lot like what I do already, which is why I ultimately decided to pass.  I also considered a masters in creative writing, but I've always been skeptical about how much I can justify the time and expense for a program that, again, would teach me stuff I likely already do anyway.

There is one university here in town, though, that allows you to create your own masters programs, and I'm thinking about seeing if I can make something that would focus on the writing side of marketing and business.  I feel like business and marketing courses would definitely add and expand on what I do already, and could really benefit my career my giving me a greater understanding of the big picture in which my copy plays a part -- and maybe give me expertise to help me expand what I do and advance my career, too.

For now, I'm just toying with these ideas, so nothing serious yet -- but I might get in touch with the university I'm thinking of, and see what they have to offer.  I'm pretty sure they also offer completely online programs, which would make scheduling this into my busy life a lot easier.
