A day in the life of a writer

By Katharine Swan On Friday, February 26, 2016 At 1:01 PM

My schedule has been all over the map lately, but I'm gradually figuring out more of what works for me and what doesn't.  Keep in mind that there is a lot of variation on this, depending on what work I have lined up for the day and what I need to do at the barn, but in general this is how a typical day seems to go for me.

9:30 to 10am - Wake up

Those of you who have known me for a while know that I am not a morning person.  I tend to go to bed later and get up later, which is perfectly fine with me.

10 to 11am - Warm up

It honestly takes me a little while to get going in the morning, so I spend some time browsing Facebook, reading articles, and checking email before I actually get down to the business of writing.

11am to afternoon - Networking, marketing, blogging, client work

This is all jumbled into one time slot because as of yet, I haven't developed much consistency here.  On days when I have more client work, I do less of the other stuff, and on days when I have less client work, I do more of the other stuff.

The end time is also flexible.  Some days I go to the barn as early as 1pm, other days as late as 6pm, depending on how much I have to do before I leave. Sometimes it also depends on how much I have (or want) to do at the barn.  Yesterday, for example, I cut out early so that I would have time to ride.

After barn - Client work

If I have more client work to do, I use the time post-barn to get it done.  Some days I work into the evenings or even late at night, and some days I don't.  Generally, though, if I go to the barn earlier in the afternoon I will work more when I get back.  But if I work until 5pm or so to meet a deadline before I head to the barn, I'll usually call it quits for the day, and enjoy having nothing else to do when I get home.

Keep in mind that this is a fairly fluid schedule -- I change it as needed to get my work done on any given day.  I know some writers who refuse to work outside of regular business hours, but I like having the flexibility to work in the evenings as needed, especially since I don't function well in the mornings and like to go to the barn during the day.  Also, as spring progresses I may make some changes again so that I can go on morning trail rides with some of the other ladies from the barn.

My biggest restriction is that I'm trying not to work on weekends.  It usually doesn't work out for me very well anyway, since I usually have a lot else that I'm trying to do (babysitting, riding, projects, etc.).

Other writers: What is your day usually like?
